New River Gorge Overnight Trips

Tucked away along the edge of the New River just below the town of Thurmond is Erskine Flats, ACE’s overnight rafting and multi-sport trip campsite.  Just a few years ago the Erskine Flats overnight site included a bunch of porta potties, a campfire ring, and a fire pit for cooking.  

With the investment of hundreds of man-hours and resources (materials and equipment), ACE has created a comfortable and unique blend of off-grid camping and a comfortable gathering space for small and large groups.   

The real value of the facility is its location along the banks of the New River just below the town of Thurmond with access to the 35+ miles of hiking trails on ACE’s property and the New River Gorge National Park trails, more specifically Southside Junction Trail, which is a main artery to trails up and down the river and is easily accessed from camp.  

Over-Night Camp Amenities

• 15 – 14ft X 14ft elevated tent platforms (large enough for 2 tents)
• Tents are provided and each tent sleeps 2 people
• 30ft X 40ft communal covered river-side pavilion
• 5ft X 8ft communal fire pit
• Shower house with flush toilets and hot showers (water is gravity-fed and heated

with on-demand propane. no electricity)

• Light is provided by tiki torches and lanterns
• 4 inch sleeping pads

ACE offers two options for New River Gorge overnight trips during the Summer Season:

Upper New Overnight Trip:
Experience the best family-friendly multiday trip around! Kiddos as young as six can paddle the Upper New River for two days, enjoying all the sun and fun they can, and camping riverside, too!

Lower New Overnight Trip:

The Lower New Overnight starts with a day on the Upper New, then leads into bigger rapids on the Lower New on day 2. 

Often called “The Grand Canyon of the East”, an overnight rafting trip through the New River Gorge is spectacular. With duckies (inflatable kayaks) or rafts on day one and rafts on day two, plus delicious meals and campfires at night… this is a true adventure to remember.

ACE Multi Adventure Riverside Overnights use Erskine Flats as well.  Your first day is a land adventure, you are shuttled to the Erskine Flats overnight site to spend the night then finish off the trip on an Upper or Lower New rafting trip. Check out the packages below:

ACE provides:

• Tents and 4 in thick sleeping pads
• Transportation to and from the river
• All rafting equipment (this does not include wetsuits and rain gear)

You need to bring:

• Sleeping bag and pillow (ACE does rent slumber kits that include sleeping bag and pillow if you don’t own a sleeping bag)
• Personal toiletries (soap, towel, toothbrush, etc.)
• A towel and a change of clothing for camp, including dry shoes
• River clothes

• Ribeye steak (we can also pack salmon for non-red meat-eating guests and

• Dessert pies. (Rotates between pecan, cherry, and apple.)
• Water, soda, and a limited amount of beer

Breakfast Day 2

• Scrambled eggs
• Bacon and sausage
• Breakfast potatoes

• Water, milk, coffee, tea, and juice
• Seasonal fresh fruit
• Vegan pancakes (if we have vegetarians and vegans)

If you are looking for an off-grid, with a few amenities, that enables you the ability to shape a more intimate, down to earth, off the beaten path experience than Erskine Flats and ACE’s overnight package is that trip.  Bring your hiking shoes and your fishing gear along with your guitar and favorite snack foods and beverages to enjoy after a day full  of adventure on the water or in the mountains and then finish the second day rafting the New River.  

Once you experience the New River Gorge on an overnight riverside trip it will be your trip of choice.
