3 Exciting Summertime Weekend Getaways in WV

SHARE

We’re on the heels of yet another glorious summer filled with white water rafting along the New River Gorge, hiking through the Appalachian Mountains, and ziplining above lush, awe-inspiring forestry. Summer’s temperatures, golden sunshine, and warm water provide our guests with seemingly endless outdoor adventures. ACE Adventure Resort has evolved into one of the premier weekend getaways in WV thanks to our 1,500 acres of serene wilderness, world-class outdoor activities, and annual events such as the Mountain Music Festival, Gritty Chix Mud Run, and Nightmare in the Gorge. We have several exceptionally unique summer events quickly approaching that you simply won’t find at other WV family resorts. Let’s start with one of our most popular events of the summer: the Gritty Chix Mud Run.

Gritty Chix Mud Run

Summer’s timely arrival coincides with the annual Gritty Chix Mud Run, one of the best weekend getaways in WV. Gritty Chix is the largest mud run in the state, where ladies of all ages can choose between an untimed Tenacious Trail 5K or the ever-popular 1 Moxie Mile run and mud obstacle course, which is carefully redesigned every year to maximize fun, laughter, teamwork, and creativity. The Gritty Chix Mud Run is perfect for bachelorette parties, coworker retreats, or girls getaways. The obstacle course features many challenges, including logs, tires, tubes, walls, and, of course, mud pits! For more information, please visit the event’s page here, or browse through last year’s images.

Big Air Blob Competition

The days that follow the Fourth of July here at ACE Adventure Resort have quickly become one of the most popular weekend getaways in WV, thanks in large part to the annual Big Air Blob Competition at Wonderland Waterpark. “Blobs,” giant inflated airbags, became a popular water activity at summer camps in the 1980s and 1990s. “The blob” was featured in the 1995 cult classic “Heavy Weights,” starring Ben Stiller as a wacky weight loss camp owner. Teams of two, consisting of a “launcher” and a “launchee,” will compete for cash prizes at this year’s event. Judges will rate the teams based on form, height, and creativity! Spectators need to purchase a waterpark pass, which starts at just $10.

Thurmond Ghost Hunt

Last but certainly not least, July’s Thurmond Ghost Hunt still has openings! This four-hour paranormal investigation in the nearby ghost town of Thurmond, WV, starts at a just $39! Thurmond was once an important rail stopover that featured a vital engine repair shop, national bank, town hall, drug store, and rail station. Most of Thurmond’s “bones” remain in terrific shape. Participants will be able to use K2 meters, spirit boxes, and SLS cameras during this guided investigation. Locals and paranormal investigators have reported strange events of the years as this town has seen its fair share of disaster, promiscuity, and death. We’re only accepting 20 participants on this investigation, so please act fast! And don’t forget that there will be another Thurmond Ghost Hunt in September.

Extended Weekend Getaways in WV

ACE Adventure Resort is within driving distance of several large metropolitan areas such as Columbus, Pittsburgh, Greensboro, and Charlotte, making us one of the premier extended weekend getaways during the summertime New River rafting season!
