It’s no secret that the beautiful city of Oak Hill, WV, is renowned for its whitewater rafting, zip lining, rock climbing, and so many more adventure activities. Thrill-seekers escape from some of the East Coast’s largest cities to our community of 8,388 to challenge themselves on rivers, rock walls, and bike trails. While the Oak Hill area has dozens of outdoor things to do in WV, it’s also home to a handful of hidden gems that many tourists sadly pass up. ACE Adventure Resort’s rafting, swimming, and kayaking seasons are wrapping up, meaning it’s time to start focusing on our winter activities: zip lining, hiking, caving, and rock climbing (not available in January and February). While you’re in the neighborhood enjoying half-priced cabins, remember to stop at these four hidden gems near ACE.

Thurmond Ghost Town

The town of Thurmond, WV, was never thriving by any stretch of the imagination, capping out at only 462 residents in the 1930s, but this former rail stopover was once home to a vital engine repair shop. Local businesses steadily shut down with the decline of steam engines in the early 1950s. Today, Thurmond is nothing but a ghost town and a small visitor center. Many of the town’s bones remain, however, such as the national bank, rail station, town hall, and drug store.

Bridge Brew Works

Bridge Brew Works’ Fayetteville taproom is open six days a week, six miles north of ACE Adventure Resort. Visiting craft breweries is one of the top things to do in WV, and Bridge Brew Works doesn’t disappoint. Their taproom features peaceful, shaded outdoor seating, a walk-up bar, and a television. They have two year-round staples, both of which are light and drinkable, although most patrons arrive for the smooth, creamy Moxxee Coffee Stout and malty Peregrine Baltic Porter.
