Conquering the Lower Gauley River

SHARE

You’re in luck if you’re visiting our thrilling West Virginia paradise during the colorful, six-week Fall Gauley season because the Lower Gauley River is the ideal whitewater rafting trip for first-timers searching for the most challenging run possible within their skill level. The Lower Gauley River is our toughest challenge for beginners while also being one of the most scenic runs in West Virginia. Many describe the Lower Gauley River as a roller coaster ride because this rushing river offers exhilarating waves with less physical strain than the Upper Gauley River.

The Lower Gauley River

The Lower Gauley is a seasonal, dam-released river that many of our guests describe as a “sweet spot.” With a difficulty rating somewhere in-between intermediate and extremely difficult, the Lower Gauley River is the perfect beginner’s rafting getaway. The river is an absolute adrenaline rush for first-timers and a non-stop thrill ride for experienced rafters. The Gauley is one of the top whitewater rivers in the world, earning the nickname the “beast of the east.” The river snakes along the northern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, providing spectacular canyon vistas.

Breathtaking Natural Scenery

The Lower Gauley River also runs through the breathtaking Gauley River National Recreation Area. This preserved region has stunning cliffside waterfalls, lush forests, mammoth boulders, and tall bluffs. Each legendary run rushes through sweeping canyons, which are especially gorgeous during autumn. Our Fall Gauley season remains one of the best whitewater experiences in the world.

Roller Coaster Waves

Ride a natural roller coaster by paddling through the rushing Lower Gauley River. The Lower Gauley is not as steep as the Upper Gauley, but it still features challenging drops and classic whitewater rapids. This seasonal river has pristine mountain water and some of the area’s most thrilling hits and splashes. Similarly to the nearby Lower New River, this river offers exhilarating intermediate waves with a ratcheted level of difficulty. Our friendly, comical, and knowledgeable guides will help make your trip to ACE Adventure the most thrilling getaway of your life.

America’s #1 Adventure Resort

A late summer or autumn rafting excursion isn’t complete without a stay in one of our rustic cabins and cottages. Spend your evenings in supreme relaxation in our 10-person Grey Fox Log Home or the Truman Lodge, our largest rental. President Harry S. Truman often used this lodge during his West Virginia hunting trips. You can also park your RV, pitch a tent, rent a bunkhouse, and try mountain-top camping.
