Start Planning a Spring New River Rafting Trip

SHARE

With New Year’s Eve officially in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking ahead to your next springtime adventure: white water rafting along the world-famous New River Gorge. We’re already filling springtime white water rafting slots for April and May on the Lower and Upper New River here at ACE Adventure Resort. Thrillseekers are itching to paddle through one of the premier white water rafting rivers in North America: the glorious New River. Our guided full-day New River rafting adventures include 6-7 hours of thrills, a delicious riverside lunch, and unforgettable memories shared with close friends and family. Here are some things to remember before you start heading to the Appalachian Mountains this spring.

What to Bring and Wear

It’s no surprise that spring white water adventures are chillier than summertime excursions, so remember to pack like a pro. Remember to pack loose, fast-drying, and durable clothes for your journey. You’ll need all of these essentials for a springtime New River rafting trip:

  • Neoprene wetsuit (available for rent)
  • Neoprene or nylon paddling jacket (available for rent)
  • Nylon pants, such as Gore-Tex
  • Synthetic poly-pro, fleece, Capilene, or lightweight wool undershirts and socks
  • Synthetic, wool, or neoprene gloves
  • Wool toboggan hat
  • Waterproof camera
  • Water bottles that can be secured
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with an adjustable strap
  • DO NOT BRING: anything cotton, heavy ponchos, or jewelry.

New River Rafting: What to Expect

Generally speaking, springtime New River rafting adventures are rain, snow, or shine unless extreme conditions warrant a cancellation. It’s important to be prepared for just about anything. All of the items above will keep you warm, even on a cold day. That being said, the average high in April is typically in the low 60s, with May sitting in the high 60s and low 70s – truly gorgeous rafting weather is the norm. The Upper New River rafting trip is a perfect option for youngers, first-timers, and families. You’ll experience class I-III rapids during the warm month of May. The Lower New River excursion, which begins in early April, is much more unpredictable weather-wise but features an onslaught of exhilarating class III-IV rapids.
